(Please note: Thank you to
everyone who has provided referrals. They are much appreciated.)
This page is for people who want a little better understanding of
things they can do to supplement a "mass produced" education.
Schools can't
be all things to all people. Today's schools have massive challenges, some of which can't be fixed by politics. The
ideal solution is to have parents be able to lead by example and provide their own cost effective enrichment. When they
can't, good educational coaches may be able to help by integrating all of their individual experience
to help students grow the skills that make them valuable and successful in today's world. (For example,
Kathy has experience in the curriculums of 9 different high schools and 7 different grade levels. She has also tutored
college level math and science. Make sure the person you work with has the right experience.)
Really good tutors
prefer to work with people they already know can be trusted to value their time and knowledge.
Most students and families arrive via referral which is one of the best ways to find a tutor. It's important
to make sure that the majority of one's investment goes directly to the person delivering the service. Education really isn't a commodity. It can't be
bought. Education is something people do; it's an individual journey. Families that don't understand that
become victims of the "badge" syndrome. In today's environment, many institutions can't adapt to the
individual needs and strengths of each student.
